Adult Consultant Psychiatrist

Julia has worked as a general adult consultant psychiatrist in Glasgow for twenty years. She qualified as a doctor in New Zealand in 1992 before coming to the UK to further her training in general medicine. She completed basic and specialist training in general adult and liaison psychiatry in the West of Scotland.

Having worked in both inpatient and outpatient NHS mental health secondary care services, she has considerable experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems. She has an interest in the assessment and management of psychotic illnesses, unipolar and bipolar mood disorders, anxiety disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions and adjustment and stress related disorders.

Qualifications

Julia has trained in the diagnostic assessment of autism, completing DISCO training developed by Lorna Wing in Oxford, and Adult Autism Assessment training developed by Simon Baron-Cohen in Cambridge. She has a particular interest in autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) such as ADHD, and in the treatment of mental health difficulties in NDCs.

NDCs are often mixed, and recent consensus expert opinion and guidance from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland suggests that single condition or exclusively NDC assessments should no longer be undertaken, as these may miss differential or co-occurring conditions. A request for NDC assessment can be undertaken in the context of comprehensive psychiatric assessment and using appropriate screening and diagnostic tools.

Treatment and monitoring for individuals with ADHD and/or autism diagnosed through other appropriate services may be offered.

Julia is an Approved Medical Practitioner under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003 and can provide capacity and other reports on request.

She is an approved BUPA consultant psychiatrist.
